Assume the whole banking system does not hold excess reserves and the required reserve ratio is 20%. If a person withdraws $100 from a bank, A. the amount of loans made by the banks to the public will fall by at most $400. B. money supply will fall by at least $400. With reference to my previous answer: http://hk.knowledge.yahoo.com/question/question?qid=7008020400055 From the given, the maximum banking multiplier: 1 / 20% = 5 Then the maximum change in deposits : - $ 100 x 5 = - $ 500 For every $ 500, the bank has to keep 20% ( i.e. $ 100 ) as reserve and so the maximum change in loans: - $ 500 - ( - $ 100 ) = - $ 400 Hence the answer is A: the amount of loans made by the bank to the public will fall by at most $400. C is wrong because of the word "at least", it should be "at most". 2008-03-27 22:03:23 補充: B is wrong again because of the word [at least], it should be [at most]. D is wrong because of the word [at most], reserves should fall [at least] by $80 as a result of initial withdrawl but fall [at most $100] after multiple credit contraction.
